Elektrons label continues to flourish, signing new music from intriguing and talented artists. For the fourth release we welcome Allen Hulsey, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, who channels his global experiences into unique and diverse productions. Both a proficient live performer and studio artist, Allen’s track Shadows Of Yesterday aligns perfectly with the outlook of Elektrons and the label founder, Hannes Bieger - who has remixed the enchanting production.
‘Shadows Of Yesterday’ combines emotionally charged layers with a mournful low end, maintaining a delicate balance between the two ends of the spectrum. Allen’s heartfelt vocals are the piece de resistance on this beautifully composed cut. The lyrics weave a relatable narrative, about someone who gets everything they want in love and life but they’re fearful of their luck, losing it all by turning back to the shadows of yesterday. This is reflected in the juxtaposition of light and dark in the instrumental.
On the remix Hannes pumps up the beats, crafting an enchanting intro that leads into a harder edged incarnation. His ability to splice progressive, harmonious elements with the tougher side of club music is evident throughout this reinterpretation. Dainty arpeggiated melodies, hypnotic layers and an insistent energy are key to this rework. The emotive aspect remains, with Allen’s vocals at the forefront, while Hannes steadily builds the tension until we reach a sombre breakdown.
